Even as a producer who puts records out as an artist I still need an email list. Its the one thing that has allowed me to grow my social media presence so fast every time there’s a new app out. You don’t have to use it like you’re delivering coupons but you should use it as a tool to stay in contact with people who support you. As there are talks of people leaving instagram how are you going to let everyone know you’re on the newest app or that you have a record coming out? Social media handles change, emails rarely do.
As a rapper part of a band back 2011 one of the things I was always curious about was how people were going to know when our next performances were. 9/10 that showed up never followed me on twitter or were facebook friends with me. One of the reasons was that we had a an investor and so there would always be flyers but in the Austin area most people just toss them to the side. In fact, its safe to say that happens in every major city. Luckily for us we had developed our brand through word of mouth. Once we had a tv performance and started grabbing the attention of a few major producers you would have thought that we’d sell out every venue. We did not. In fact, there were a few times where there were barely people in the room. Looking back, the one thing that would’ve helped us a lot is an email list. We could’ve easily organized it by city and emailed people our next performance weeks in advanced.
The same thing applies to being a producer. New beats on your website? Email people to check them out. Got a major placement? Email people to check it out. A direct message in someone’s inbox will help you maintain and develop that relationship. Make it short, sweet, and to the point.
By the time you read this you probably have an email from me in your inbox…thank you.
