One of the first questions I always an artist who sends me a query saying that they’d like to work with me is, “What made you want to write music?” Its one of the most complex questions you can ask an artist today. Through the many songwriters, musicians, and producers I’ve interacted it I see the same consistent answer which is, “I don’t know.”
My mother used to tell me what everyone has a story to tell and everyone wants to speak their truth. Your journey as an individual is probably one of the most intriguing things you have ever read. I mean why not, its YOUR story. Why wouldn’t you be excited about the next chapter? However, that doesn’t mean everyone wants to hear about it or that its interesting. For example, some may find it interesting to hear about a person falling in love at first sight under the Eiffel Tower while others may be enthrallhearing an entire album about someone having multiple sex partners. Some may be in the space of wanting to have a romantic get away. Others may want to stand in VIP with champagne dripping down their arms. Both stories can be intriguing, but doesn’t mean they are.
The hope for every songwriter I believe is to share their story with the world in hopes that it’ll inspire other people or make them feel something. The biggest compliment you can give an artist is that they’re song is your favorite song. Imagine putting hours into crafting words and melodies that you will lay over a beat and release to the masses. Think about how nervous you would be after the releasing it hoping that no one says it sucks or worse, no one even responds or cares. Now let’s say one day you’re on the train and someone recognizes you and says your song made them feel something. After all the hours, nerves, and money put behind that record that moment made it worth it.
So, why do you make music?
