Video Games Inspire Me to Make Music

Inspiration can come from anywhere and for me, lately, its been coming from a very unlikely source. I think its my brain not having to think up of melodies, chords, and arrangement tricks to keep listeners engaged that’s really doing the trick. One of my favorite games is Watch Dogs 2 and after playing it twice I was some how motivated to get right back to making music. Its not the graphics and gameplay that’s sparking the fire, it's the storyline.

What got me into writing records were stories that were almost not believable yet you could see happening. In the game Watch Dogs 2 Marcus is a hacker that was once a victim of hacking and wants to do his part to protect the world from corporations misusing people’s data for their own financial gain. This inspired a few records that I would later write and produce reference tracks for but never saw the light of the day. However, it did give me a fresh perspective for ways I could find inspiration whenever I’m not “feeling it.” A lot of times we as producers can get burned out because we’re overseeing so much of the process of creating a record. It should be standard practice and considered part of the process when trying to create a record.

Its good I have a new outlet now and know where to go when I feel like I just can’t come up with a melody or even a beat for that matter. I wonder what Death Stranding would inspire me to make…
