I Have Social Media but No Idea What to Post

By now in 2021 we all know that the one thing that will help your social media presence grow tremendously is to post new content everyday on those platforms. I am currently A&Ring and Executive Producing an album for an artist and one of the things me and his manager harp on is that he has to post consistently to grow his brand before the release. Of course there’s been talks of what the marketing and advertising budget should be and I try not to overstep my bounds but I did suggest in a zoom meeting one time that the artist should focus on creating as much content as possible to get things moving. After some deliberations I pulled the artist to the side and said to just post more until they figure out what that budget should be. He then asked me what he should post because he has no idea. I told him the same thing Gary Vaynerchuk said years ago…..document!

Now in today’s post I’m going to use myself as an example as I am currently floating around 4,000 followers. Besides instagram and facebook ads and paid promotion on my posts I focused on creating content that was directed to my followers and my followers only, not the entire planet. I’m pretty sure someone living in Ibiza who’s a fan of SG Lewis is probably not checking for beats from a R&B/pop producer based in New York City. When I decided to take this approach I wasn’t hundred percent sure what to post. However, I started to notice a trend on my accounts. I kept getting DM’s from people asking me if I was a music producer even though it says so not only in my bio but also my screen name. So, I started posting screenshots of those DMs to further the discussion. (I did mark out the people’s name, I’m not a jerk.) Then I made a vlog talking about the interactions I was having. More content. Then I made another video giving tips on how to network properly. Even more content. Finally, I started a series on the importance of networking in the music business. By the time I was done with this campaign I had a month’s worth of posts. My engagement went through the roof and I amassed around 1200 followers over the course of 3 months. Not bad.

The point is that in order to know what to posts you have to first, post something. From there your followers will tell you what they like and don’t like. If you post a selfie and you get a few likes. Cool. Now let’s say you post your opinion about a new movie on Netflix and get a bunch of likes and comments. From there you can access that your followers are probably interested in the same movies you are. You can then take that “data” and start integrating movie references into whatever it is that you’re doing. You may even discover that you have a strong enough following where you can do movie reviews that could eventually lead to a sponsorship or brand partnership. All of this can be possible if you just do one thing. Post.

Don’t worry about who’s going to like it and who’s not. Even if you’re the only one who likes the content at first. That’s okay because overtime people who have the same interests will eventually come along.

Hope this helps. See you at work.
