J Dvnl on performing at DROM in New York City

When J Dvniel approached me about his vision for his very first performance ever the first thing I ask him was “what is it that you would like to see on stage?“

A lot of times when we ask as producers are working with an artist we get into the habit of sending out beats or demos based on our vision for the artist. We should first be asking the artist what it is that they would like to accomplish with the record. Reason being, a lot of people already have an idea of what they would like when they are performing either on stage or recording a song. Put the artist’s vision first before sending anything out.

Now that I’ve gotten that out the way, let’s get back to J. Dvniel’s performance. When he told me what it was that he wanted I instantly knew who to call to help being his vision to life. I called two female vocalists, alto and soprano, and J called his very own vocal coach to be his background singers. During the very first rehearsal the only thing that I was focused on was how well everyone work together. Reason being, it doesn’t matter how well everyone can sing if they can’t get along. You can have the greatest singers of all time but if there is bad energy amongst them it will translate on stage.

So the whole point of this post is to get everyone to think a bit bigger than what’s happening at the moment. See how well the people that you are bringing in, whether it’s the engineer, vocalist, or even the producer, can work well together.

Listen more, watch more, receive feedback more, and most importantly adjust.
