The reason why it may be hard for a production group to move forward is because the leader of the group lacks vision. One of the responsibilities of a leader should be to empower his or her team to make decisions that will move everyone forward. There’s nothing wrong with consulting with the team on major decisions but that person should still have some autonomy. So how does this apply to your team of producers, artists, engineers, or DJs?
Let’s say a your DJ runs into an artist that you feel would make a great a collab with the artist in your group. If the DJ feels that they can’t approach that artist without consulting with you before even approaching that artist you may be missing out on an opportunity. So let your team know that if there are opportunities out there for everyone to progress they should go for them even if it’s just beneficial for that one person.
The reason why you should empower receiving make decisions is that you never want someone to feel that you are holding them back. You want your team feel as though they are one that is a part of a larger conglomerate. Your team members should feel as though they can go out and make serious progress without dealing with the repercussions of their decisions. On top of that, they shouldn’t feel as though they can’t move without you. The goal today is ownership and should be the bar, not to just be be a cog in the wheel.
Your team will be more nimble when everyone feels like they have autonomy. If you or someone else has an idea, you and that person should feel comfortable enough to express that idea, no matter how dumb you may feel it may be. Innovation is important and some of the best ideas we’ve never heard of because people didn’t feel confident share that idea let alone are in the graveyard.
