Does Your Clubhouse Experience Suck? Mine Too. Let’s Talk About It

First and foremost, this is a great app. If you are looking for investment advice, connecting with other entrepreneurs or even looking to learn more about tech this is the place you want to be. However, if you are in the music business like me you may have noticed that a lot of chat rooms are all over the place. From “How to get into Real Estate with $0” to “When You’re Sleep She’s on Demon Time.” Like most of you I jumped into the app around the Thanksgiving break (apparently this is when the floodgates started to open) and I began following a lot of people whom I thought I could get a lot of value from. Unfortunately, what I discovered was that a lot of those people really didn’t say much when it came to learning more about the business. In fact, I kind of felt like I was on a conference call with a bunch people having nothing to talk about other than each other. Later on I would find out that the reason why I was having such a bad experience was indeed because of the people I was following. Today I’m going to dive into how me not being a bit more thoughtful about the people I was following turned into me having a dull experience.

Like most, whoever I followed on instagram or twitter I decided to follow on clubhouse as well. That was a mistake and here’s why. If I had given it a second thought it would have dawned on me that whatever these people talk about on twitter or IG they’re probably going to talk about on Clubhouse. Think about it, the guy that’s always talking about customizing his car isn’t going to get on CH (Clubhouse) and suddenly start talking about NFT’s. (Editor’s not: He is probably most definitely talking about NFT’s but doesn’t mean he knows what he’s talking about.) People pretty much speak on the same things consistently across all platforms. It’s sort of their brand. I shouldn’t expect The Rock or Kevin Hart to suddenly talk about Global Warming on a deep level on CH if that’s not something they’ve ever spoken about on other platforms. Your favorite artist probably isn’t going to either.

You should give your new follows a trial run. I came up with this concept about the 7th week of using the app. I would follow a few people whom I’ve never heard of in hopes of learning more about them and to see what they have going on. What I discovered by purposely joining the rooms that they were in or just looking at the title, I could pretty much gage what they were going to speak about. If every time I look up you are in Demon Time Rooms or the title says “Everybody Cheats, Get Used to It” then I can probably guess we’re not going to connect there because to be honest, I don’t care to join those rooms. After awhile, I would unfollow these same people on CH and connect with them on other platforms. It’s nothing personal, but my time is limited and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.

I love meeting new people and connecting but I want to connect with like minded people. I’m all for learning new things and keeping an open mind but I have no interests in learning about how often instagram models get flown out. To be honest, that’s a conversation I’d rather have in person and not in front of a bunch of people I don’t know. Look to connect with those you can either learn from or those you can collaborate with sometime down the line. Having this in mind will greatly improve our CH experience. Remember, all of these platforms are for social networking so use them with that intent.

Now go unfollow the last 100 people you followed on CH cause I guarantee if you’re not seeing any good chats in the hallway, you’re the problem.
